It had been a bit of a rough go that morning. I figured a trip to the park to eat lunch would do us all some good. I packed up a loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter and a jar of jelly. A box full of snack bags from Costco and 986,872 water bottles and we were off.
Our first park choice was overrun with kids on their last day of school. Strike #1.
Our second choice had a squirrel infestation. Strike #2.
The third choice was CLOSED for remulching. Strike #3. I was about to have a full on mutiny on my hands.
Driving the back roads to another park, I came across a sweet little house with an American flag flying. Hanging from the front stoop was a blue star banner.
“Son In Service” it boldly stated.
Every kid on my car started sqealing….”MOMMY DID YOU SEE THAT BANNER????”
Of course I had.
And I pulled over.
“What are you gonna do?” They all asked…curious as could be.
I pulled out our Christmas card and Courson jumped out of the car with me. We knocked on the door and a sweet older couple came to the porch.
After explaining myself I told them thank you. They were humbled.
“Nobody’s ever thanked us before. No one even knows what that flag means.”
I explained that letting people know was part of my calling. After we took a photo together, I formally introduced myself.
“Reback did you say? Like those running Rebacks?”
“That’s us!” I declared. I may not look like the peak of athletic perfection at the moment but I married into one athletic family!
“I used to babysit one of their kids, years ago. He’s gotta be near 50 years old.”
“That’s my husband David!”
What a small town. What an amazing coincidence. What an incredible blessing that in all my blunders of the day, God blessed us with being able to thank a hero’s family. Even better? Their son had just returned from deployment two days ago. On Memorial Day.
God is so good that even in the craziness of our lives He gives us such opportunity to encourage others and be a witness to the greatness right in our own neighborhoods!
