I used to be uber into politics. Uber doesn’t even mean what it used to– now it means personal taxi and politics are not exactly what they used to be either. Guys in suits who have more experience and better campaign managers than Trump just got handed their rear ends and have left (seemingly) most people scratching their heads wondering how did we get here.
The silent majority of Republicans have overwhelmingly voted for Trump as their candidate and even though I don’t want to weigh in on that, I will weigh in on the “There Goes America” mentality I hear opined far too frequently.
We started with a wide field of candidates but I’ll be downright truthful and tell you that NOT ONE of them had me solidly in their boat. There were things about each I admired but I just kept saying to myself– “Is this really the best America has to offer in terms of leadership?”
Clearly, the answer is no.
There are far better candidates, with far better leadership skills than the ones who placed their hat in the ring. But who wants to wreck their family like that? Who wants every hound of hell digging through their past and gunning for despicable dirt and half truths to smear every accomplishment or step of headway you’ve made in life? Who wants their children’s lives torn apart, to be threatened with reputational ruin on any given day and who really has an army of lawyers at the ready to just deal with the superfluous lawsuits and inflammatory accusations?
America, we have done this to ourselves. We have splattered every candidate over the last 25 years with mud so black and then we have the gall to ask why anyone won’t wear white and give it a try! I understand vetting a candidate, I understand tough questions and tactics. But can any of us truthfully say, “I’ll run, I’ve got nothing in my past that could come back to bite me…nothing that could be twisted into shady or questionable…I know I’ll NEVER have a remark taken out of context and yes my spouse and children walk on water so they should hold up fine to any and all scrutiny…”???
Of course not.
Trump won in many ways because he out-bullied the bullies of the press. He won because all conservatives (that I know anyways) are pretty sick of the same ol’ middle of the road, luke-warm, politics-as-usual and we don’t feel like the “establishment” gets us or even cares about representing us.
But blame for who we had to choose from falls directly on all of us when you realize just how costly and crazy someone’s life becomes when they chose to stand up in the arena. And I’m not saying America isn’t worth it, I’m just saying who among us would even dare risk it…and then imagine what it would be like to really stand your entire family, your past and your future under that kind of relentless scrutiny.
And that’s why we are left with someone like Trump.
