It was flag day yesterday..
And everywhere we went the children repeatedly asked me why the American flags were all at half mast.
For the younger ones, I briefly explained that a very bad man had hurt people and that’s why mommy and the big sisters went to Orlando to help.
To my 10-13 year olds, I said that there had been a terrorist attack in a nightclub. I explained that there had been dozens of victims and that the perpetrator was killed.
Only my oldest four knew what had really happened. With them I spoke extensively about the attack, and focused on the fact that it was our country under siege. Yes, the madman focused on a particular lifestyle, but his kind of hatred would have/could have chosen anyone anywhere. In other nations, his kind repeatedly terrorize Christians, women, steal young girls from their families, and brain wash young men into suicide bombing. My dearest Gold Star families have lost their beloved sons in the war against terror and my good friend Brian Mast lost both his legs to a terrorist’s IED. This type of hatred targets freedom, period.
And then I remembered that it was Flag Day.
This Star Spangled banner stands for every life in this country. This banner unites us. This banner drapes the coffins of those who have paid the high price for all that freedom since 1776. I wave Old Glory proudly in the face of terrorism…their cowardly acts of hatred will never bring this great nation under submission. Hatred never wins. Freedom always triumphs.
