Frequently, people write me about my children’s names, asking the meaning behind them. I have even been honored several times by a family choosing to use one of our names– what a joy! But since the question comes up so frequently, I’ll be sharing the meanings of each child’s name. Enjoy!
I have always been a big Jackie O fan. So when we found out our first child was going to be a girl, naturally Jacqueline topped the list of names. Visions in my head of the beautiful young Kennedy wife, I shared my name with my parents one night at the dinner table. My father was appalled! “My second wife’s name was Jackie! Heavens no! Find another name!” Simple as that the matter was closed.
Thankfully, a few weeks later we went for dinner again. My mother and father suggested I make up my daughter’s name just as they had mine. You see, my father’s name was WalLY. My mother’s name is PierrETTE. So they combined them and made up “Lyette.” So my mother played around with our names until she said, “Dahlia, Dolly, Da-Lee” and I hollered out, “THAT’S IT! Daly!!! I love it! Then we argued because I loved the middle name “Grace.” But my father contended that we couldn’t name her Daly Grace or it would sound like suppertime prayers. So we settled on David’s mother’s middle name which was quite fitting. A sweet southern double name. I loved it.
David loved it. My father was happy and my mother got the prestigious honor of having come up with it. And of course my mother in law was pleased as punch to have someone named after her. Ironically, Daly Kay has chosen to pursue politics in her life’s calling, and I don’t think she looks completely unlike the young Jackie Kennedy!
