David Beckham. Soccer star. Total hottie. Married to the even hotter Victoria Beckham…who also happens to have enough of a kick fanny attitude that even if I did disagree with their parenting I wouldn’t dare say a word. Her stilettos would feel mighty painful through my Jack Roger’s flip flops.
Last month, the best looking parents (aside from Tom and Giselle) caught some flack because their four year old was photographed with her pacifier. A binky. Or as they like to call it in England…a dummy.
Out of my 15 children, several have taken a binky, several have sucked their thumb or their fingers. Very few self soothed by rocking or twirling their hair. But in every case I’ll tell you I prefer the binky for the simple reason that it can be taken away.
Finger and thumb sucking is a far more challenging habit to overcome…one of my children still did it at age eight. Most of my kids have waved bye bye to the binky by 12-15 months. But that’s only because it’s easier to deal with a few rough nights of fussing before they can holler and whine “maaaaa maaaaaa” in that most pathetic and heartbreaking tone. For those parents who wait to break their baby of the binky until later or just let it hang around until the child breaks themselves…really in the scheme of things NOT SUCH A BIG DEAL.

In the article David Beckham says that his little angel had a fever and they were just doing whatever it took to soothe her. Amen to that, Daddy. I have done all kinds of things to get us through a rough night or a tough patch…things that would be out of the ordinary but hey- sometimes a mom or dad has got to do whatever they have to to make it through. On an airplane. Through a wedding. At an event that dragged on far longer than you anticipated. During a road trip. Some days, some seasons are just like that.

And we would all do well to remember that sometimes a parent makes a decision to do something, change something, allow something for reasons that the rest of the world just isn’t privy to. Like little Harper’s fever.
So carry on Beckham. You’re doing great Daddy-O. You and that beautiful wife of yours should really consider another child…superior genes like yours should replicate as often as possible.
