It’s so easy, as a mom, to find myself hosting a pity party for one. I can go into a downward spiral quickly when I think about MYself and MY needs. Especially being raised as an only child…where my life revolved around ME, ME, and ME.
Motherhood quickly cleared a lot of that out of my head, but the selfish nature in all of us can really come taunting especially when we are tired. Sometimes the best thing I can do is get myself to bed early. And sometimes I just have to be real with myself and say…
Suck It Up Buttercup.
There are seasons that are just more challenging.
Maybe it’s relational… Our marriage, a challenge with our children, a tough relationship with a family member. We find ourselves emotionally exhausted.
Maybe it’s related to a personal goal… Something professional, some athletic endeavor, something that just makes us physically tired.
Maybe it’s a health issue! Maybe we are struggling through some serious stuff health wise or someone we love dearly is.
And with all the love, compassion, and heartfelt adoration I can muster, sometimes the best piece of advice I can give, especially even to myself is just to…
Suck It Up Buttercup!
The only other option is to shrink back, stop trying, cease taking forward steps toward that person giving us grief, that physical endeavor causing us exhaustion, or that health issue that is threatening to take us out of the fight.
No way.
Suck it up.
Keep fighting, keep trying, keep pushing, keep reaching out, reaching up, overcoming and making whatever small progress we can muster. Suck it up. Because sometimes it is only our ability to suck it up and keep moving forward one more day, one more step, that brings us into the relationship, the overcoming strength, or the health that we are so desperately seeking.
We have troubles all around us, but we are not defeated. We do not know what to do, but we do not give up. – 2 Corinthians 4:8(ICB)
Sometimes, in the thick of it, we may not know what to do, we may barely even be able to take another step, but we have to Suck It Up and NOT GIVE UP.

Ha, I visited your site today with the purpose of searching for advice for when you just feel tired and directionless in your mothering/homeschooling; I suppose I need to “suck it up, buttercup!” Are there any practical ways you take care of yourself that you think are vital? I think I get confused about what if self case and what is selfishness. I always feel like I have less energy than I need and I am not naturally inclined toward planning and organization; getting our homeschool days started are tricky (it’s our first year and there’s a busy one year old who doesn’t seem interested in anything besides playing WITH mommy). I feel like these questions are getting muddled, but do you guys start your school morning with a set routine? Tips for schooling with littles around? I love your seasoned wisdom, thanks for sharing.

Kathryn I think the best thing I can suggest to you is to buy my book. Most, if not all, of what you’re looking for is in there.

The above was supposed to say that I get confused about what’s self care* and what’s selfishness, especially as the sole introvert in a family of major extroverts! I feel guilty for feeling like I crave a break from my kids in the afternoons, but I know many families implement a quiet time–how has that looked in your family?
