This Past February, we had the pleasure of honoring some of our nation’s greatest heroes…a group of local Gold Star Mothers.
A Gold Star Mother is a woman who has lost her child in the service of our nation’s military. These woman gave our country their finest when their child signed up to serve and protect this great nation and our Constitution. The cost of freedom for them has a name, a date of birth, and a date when they passed into eternity.
These women raised heroes. Children who grew into adults that had a supernatural desire to place their own safety on the line for nebulous millions that would likely never know their name or recognize their ultimate sacrifice. As a mother to five boys, I nightly imagine these woman as I tuck in my sons. I cherish each hug and kiss, knowing the Gold Star Mothers I have met and the thousands that I have not would gladly give anything for just one more chance to kiss their child goodnight.
The goal of the evening was simple: honor the Gold Star Mothers by hearing the stories about their children, hoping to encourage them that their sacrifice is honored by all of us at Believe With Me. I also hoped to inspire the moms who follow this blog to give parenting their ALL, that the cost of freedom these Gold Star Mothers bore was Not For Nothin’. My Believe With Me moms came and served, hosted, and worked the entire evening to make these Gold Star Mothers feel loved on and appreciated. A friend who is also a photographer spent much of the night capturing the emotions of the evening. A local florist donated the beautiful flower arrangements and a very special benefactor gave generously to cover the cost of the food and gifts. Dozens of families contributed letters to the Gold Star moms and several other families also participated by giving gifts and letters from school children, while my dear friend Amanda crafted several nights in a row with me to prepare the house to look so festive!
I’m sharing with you some of the photos from that most memorable evening and I am grateful to be able to tell you that next year’s Not For Nothin’ event will be the week of Mother’s Day. If you are interested in hosting a Gold Star Mother’s dinner in your home or at a locale near you, please contact us and we will be happy to partner with you. I’d love to see these healing and heartwarming events reach every Gold Star Mother in our country.
As mothers, we can begin to appreciate their sacrifice. As Americans, everything we enjoy in this great country is because of the costly price they paid. So many Gold Star Families and we all owe them a debt we can never repay…but at least in some small way we can let them know that their loss was Not For Nothin’…and we will use our relationships with them and the stories they share with us about their precious sons and daughters to spur us on in our parenting and fighting the good fight.
In appreciation and gratitude for their generosity, if you are in need of a photographer, I can proudly give you my dear friend Sally Prissert, a gifted artist indeed. My friend Beth Halpern of Southern Floral Company is an incredible florist who donated her time and talent to bring beauty to the tables. I am so very thankful for every ounce of help from so many that went into such a wonderful evening. This Mother’s Day, remember our nation’s Gold Star Mothers in your prayers. Kiss your kids extra and tell them the cost of our great nation’s freedom. Let’s honor these Gold Star Moms by giving our parenting the best we can every day.
