Man, sometimes parenting is just so hard. The child that we changed their diaper, walked the floor with all night every night because they were colicky, wiped their noses, cried the first time we dropped them off at preschool, sat through stitches, pulled their first tooth, dealt with the bullies, helped with homework, held while crying over their best friend mistreating them, navigated through their first crush, took them to sports practice after game after team meeting, changed schools, learned hard lessons about friendship, worked through bad report cards, stressed, sweated, cried, prayed over, and believed for…is probably our greatest love this side of eternity and hands down our biggest investment of time and effort.
It’s no wonder that such love and investment is so incredibly heartbreaking when that child decides to walk in foolishness or darkness. I have held dozens of parents in my arms struggling through such challenges and cried more than a few tears of my own when faced with such fear in my own parenting. It can be the most harrowing walk of our life. Lord Almighty is it hard.
And yet the simplicity of this verse in I Corinthians 13 is the most simple and profound answer.
Love Never Gives Up.
Love them, no matter how hurt we are or how terrifying the situation.
Love them and fight like the dickens in prayer.
Never ever ever ever give up the fight.
Never give up on a child.
It’s never too late, never too far gone, never said and done, never way beyond our reach. We have the God of Angel Armies on our side and we win in the end.
So no matter the difficulties we may be facing today in our parenting, just remember, Love Never Gives Up.
