Parenting can be tough. I’m here to tell you that no one gets through this job of raising up a child to adulthood unscathed. Anyone who says they did….is lying.
Allan Geiger Jr. is a father. He’s got an 18-year-old son that decided driving around in the Ford Explorer his mom and dad bought him while high would be a great idea. Hanging with some buddies he had begun making some pretty foolish decisions and Dad had enough.
So late one night earlier this week, Allen posted an ad on Craigslist putting his son’s truck up for sale. He was even bold enough to say why he was selling it, offering a price reduction to anyone who lived nearby so that his son could still see the truck driving around town as he was now WALKING or riding his bike...as a reminder that foolish choices have consequences.
Allan Geiger is my kinda dad. He means what he says and says what he means. If his son wasn’t going to straighten up, Allan was willing to go the distance.
He wanted his son to learn.
I’ve had to pull the plug a few times in my tenure as mean momma. I’ve had to be the bad guy. I’ve had to say and do things that were less than pleasurable and I know it ticked off my kids or embarrassed them. But so far, it’s been worth it. I have made plenty of mistakes, but those times when I’ve had to be the big bad meanie, I always had my children’s best interests at heart.
Just like Allen Geiger, Jr.
Allen, you have my respect. But far more importantly, it sounds like your son is finally beginning to realize the kind of father he has. A dad more concerned in his son’s future and making his young man a goal driven young man than one driven by addiction. Proud of you Allen and my prayers and the prayers of everyone who reads this go out to you and your family. Your son will grow up to be an incredible young man because of the way you and your wife parented him through these challenging issues.
