“You have given a banner to those who fear you, that it may be displayed because of the truth.” – Psalm 60:4
I discovered I was pregnant for the 11th time with our 15th child only a few months after Stone was born. In the crazy mix of my father’s death and moving to a new home, I thought my new sleepy tendency was due to exhaustion and sadness.
But just out of curiosity the day before I was supposed to run a half marathon I decided to take a pregnancy test.
Surprise, surprise…I wasn’t exhausted from being exhausted, there was a new baby on the way!
We chose the name Verity because I loved the meaning: TRUTH. Her middle name “Banner” was laden with significance for us. First, the word the Bible uses for banner in Hebrew is that of an ensign, which is a flag used in battle to mark a rallying point for the troops. Second, I loved the idea of a child whose faith was so bold it was like a waving flag in the midst of a battle. And the banner of
truth that our faith offers in such uncertain and shaky times made this name very appealing to us.
We thought we’d call her by her middle name, Banner…but instead we shortened her first name to Ver (pronounced like care but with a V). She’s quite a precocious, loquacious child who seems to be a 25 year old trapped in a two year old’s body. She has an opinion and doesn’t hate to share it, while her reasoning often makes indisputable sense.
On another more-than-coincidental note, Verity is the 10th daughter out of 15 children, and her birthday is 10/15 and she was born an 3:15PM (15:15 military time).
God is good to answer our prayers and continues to bless us with such great opportunities in each of these children.
